FBC ABERNATHY
The Problem
First Baptist Church in Abernathy Texas hired Halo Architects to help them solve a problem they had concerning ADA access into their education building.
Existing Conditions
The building currently has an existing hollow metal door that opens to a parking lot which is separated from the building by an alley. On the inside of this doorway, the ground floor is approximately two feet below grade with a 4 foot by 4 foot landing and a stairway leading into a long narrow hallway that stretches the length of the building.
Design Goals
After meeting with the church and researching a few options to provide ADA access, it has been determined that the design goal is to allow ADA access through this doorway.
Halo Architects recognizes that in order to be successful in providing a successful design solution, 1. we will need to add something to the exterior of the building to announce that this is one of the main entries, 2. we will need to provide a ramp to address the change in grade between the landing and the floor of the building, and 3. we will need to create an area to function as a small foyer to mitigate possible congestion.
The Design Solution
Due to property setbacks and the alleyway that runs parallel to the building, the entry design needs to be subtle but still announce that this is an entry point. We changed the existing solid steel door to be a glass door, added signage, and provided protection overhead with a small awning.
In order to design a ramp that meets the ADA code, we need more room on the inside of the entry. We know we need to create space for the foyer as well. To gain the necessary space, we are proposing to remove the two walls that separate the nearest two classrooms from the hallway, and use the resulting space for a foyer that can handle the ramp and a small fellowship space.
The construction scope is to include a new ceiling design, new lighting, modified mechanical ductwork, new flooring, and adapting power outlet locations to address the new layout for proposed furniture and equipment.
